What the chapter is about

This chapter takes us to a dairy farm, where cows and buffaloes give milk. It is full of real-life maths: counting litres of milk, finding the cost of milk, and sharing work fairly.

Milk is measured in litres (L) and millilitres (mL): 1 litre = 1000 millilitres. If one cow gives 8 litres in a day, five cows give 5 × 8 = 40 litres.

Money maths appears too: if milk costs ₹40 per litre, then 5 litres cost 5 × 40 = ₹200. Multiplication and addition are the farmer's daily tools.

Farmers also keep daily records: how much milk each animal gives, how much is sold, and how much money comes in. These records help them plan — for example, whether the farm needs more feed, or whether one animal needs care.

What you should learn

Read the numbers in the chapter like a shopkeeper: how much, how many, at what rate? Then choose multiply or add.

Key Terms

  • Litre (L) — 1000 millilitres; used for milk and liquids.
  • Dairy farm — A farm where animals are kept for milk.
  • Rate — Price of one unit, e.g. ₹40 per litre.
  • Total — The whole amount after adding or multiplying.
  • Cost — The money needed to buy something.
  • Record — Written notes of numbers and facts, kept to remember and plan.

Remember

  • 1 L = 1000 mL.
  • Total milk = number of animals × milk per animal.
  • Total cost = quantity × rate.
  • Check units: litres with litres, rupees with rupees.

Exam Tip / Common Mistake

Common mistake: mixing litres and millilitres in one sum. Convert to one unit first — 2 L 500 mL = 2500 mL.

One cow per day8 litres
Five cows per day40 litres

Think and try

One cow gives 8 litres a day. How much do 3 cows give in a day, and how much in 2 days? Work it out step by step: first one day, then two days. Check your answer by adding instead of multiplying.

Practice set — try it yourself

  1. One buffalo gives 6 litres a day. How much do 4 buffaloes give?
    Hint: Multiply.
  2. Milk costs ₹50 a litre. What is the cost of 3 litres?
    Hint: Multiply quantity by rate.
  3. Convert 2 litres 500 millilitres into millilitres.
    Hint: 2 × 1000, then add 500.
  4. A farm collects 60 litres and sells 45 litres. How much is left?
    Hint: Subtract.
  5. If 10 litres cost ₹500, what is the cost of 1 litre?
    Hint: Divide.

How to use this page: Read the summary, say the Key Terms in your own words, then try the practice set without looking. Ask your teacher or parent to check your answers.
