What the chapter is about
This chapter is about glass bangles and the town of Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh, famous all over India for making them. Bangles are worn on the wrist and are loved for their colour and shine.
Making a glass bangle is skilled work. Glass is heated in a furnace until it glows and melts, then it is shaped into a ring and cooled slowly. The artisans of Firozabad have done this work for generations, and their families depend on this craft.
The chapter shows both beauty and hard work: behind every shining bangle is a worker standing near great heat. It teaches us to value handmade things and the people who make them.
Handmade things carry the maker's time in them. A machine can make many bangles quickly, but a handmade bangle shows the skill of hands that have practised for years. That is why handmade work is often treasured and kept carefully.
What you should learn
Follow the journey of a bangle in the chapter: hot glass → shaping → cooling → colouring → market. Writing steps in order is a good exam skill.

Chart / Table: How a glass bangle is made
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Heating | Glass melts in a furnace |
| 2. Shaping | Hot glass is formed into a ring |
| 3. Cooling | The ring cools slowly |
| 4. Colouring | Colours and shine are added |
Think and try
Hold up any bangle or ring you have at home and look at how it catches the light. Then describe it in three words — its colour, its shine and its shape. Why do people like things that shine?
