What the chapter is about

Wordsworth imagines Nature taking a young girl, Lucy, for three years to educate her. Nature promises to make her a lady: the stars, the clouds, the flowers and the fawn will teach her grace, calm and beauty.

But the poem ends in loss: after three years, Lucy dies. Nature's lovely plan is cut short by death, and the poet is left with grief and memory. It is a tender poem about nature, beauty and the shortness of life.

What you should learn

Nature can shape beauty and grace, but human life is short and precious.

Key Terms

  • Lucy — The young girl of the poem.
  • Nature — Here, a mother-teacher who educates the child.
  • Grace — Beautiful, gentle movement and manner.

  • Grief — Deep sorrow at loss.

Remember

  • Nature takes Lucy for three years to educate her.
  • Stars, clouds, flowers and fawn are her teachers.
  • She will learn grace, calm and beauty.
  • After three years, Lucy dies.
  • The poet is left with grief and memory.

Exam Tip / Common Mistake

Common mistake: treating it as a happy nature poem only. Its heart is LOSS — nature's plan cut short by death.

By her company: the silent stars will give her grace, the floating clouds her calm, the flowers their beauty, and the fawn its gentle ways.
  3. What happens at the end of three years?
Lucy dies. Nature's beautiful plan is broken by death, and the poem turns from hope to sorrow.
